Real Life 101

Today, we’re bringing back some of our viewers’ favorites from last season. We’ll start off at the TV studio where Helena met a former NFL Super Bowl champion. He shared his inspiring story of what he’s accomplished by putting forth his best effort in every aspect of life, even when things didn’t always go his way. We’ll also bring back a very moving story from a woman who was a victim of human trafficking from an early age. She talked to Shawn about how she has arisen from the abuse to open a community coffee shop – as well as help others and bring awareness to human trafficking. Putting clues together to solve who committed a crime is a difficult task. We’ll see an encore of Helena’s interview with a crime scene investigator who gave her some insight into his challenging career.

We continue to take a look back at some of your favorite interviews from last season. We’ll revisit the classroom where Shawn met a teacher who keeps his students interested and learning more by integrating art into STEM classes. If you are interested in computers and statistics, you won’t want to miss the encore of Helena’s interview with a research professor who introduced her to the world of data science – one of the hottest careers around. Then Shawn will talk with an airport operations manager and learn about the many duties that are involved in running a busy and expanding airport. And if you are into engineering, architecture and roller coasters, we might have the perfect job for you! We’ll visit SeaWorld Orlando where Shawn talks with a man who designs many of the thrill rides and attractions at the park!

Most pilots try to avoid flying into extreme storms when they can. But Shawn will meet a man whose job is to fly directly into and through tropical storms and hurricanes as a NOAA hurricane hunter pilot. Who would you call if you had a venomous snake in your bathroom or a raccoon in your attic? Shawn will introduce us to a wildlife control operator who captures these critters and removes them from homes and properties. Plus, Shawn will talk with a law student about what it’s like going through law school and working as a summer law clerk serving the low-income population.

The old-time barbershops are making a resurgence with a new look. Shawn will meet a barber who loves using his creativity to give his clients a trendy new cut . . . as well as providing a listening ear. There are many ways to further your career once you become a firefighter. We’ll talk with a hazmat team member and learn why he chose this specialty within the fire department. Wonder what it takes become a licensed architect? Shawn will introduce us to a young woman who will give us a look into the education, training and licensing required.

Interested in a thrilling job in meteorology and aviation? We’ll take a visit to NOAA’s Operations Center where Shawn meets up with an onboard meteorologist who flies through the worst weather Mother Nature can deliver. The horrific act of human trafficking is occurring in cities and towns all over America and throughout the world. Shawn will talk with an investigator whose job is to fight this abuse of innocent victims. On a lighter note, we’ll meet a restaurateur who grew up in – and helps run the Italian restaurant his family owns. He shares with Shawn some of the secrets to the restaurant’s success.

Today, we begin our 20th anniversary celebration by taking a look at some careers our past field reporters, Carly and Luis, explored. We’ll start out in the stateroom of a cruise ship where Carly met up with a stateroom attendant. Ever since 9/11, immigration into the United States has been a very hot topic. We’ll bring back Luis’ meeting with an attorney who became an advocate for people from other countries wanting to make their home in the USA. Then we’ll take you back to Carly’s interview with a Pediatric Physical Therapist and learn how she helps children with different disabilities and injuries develop and heal.

If you’re interested in being a doctor, the University of Florida has a great medical program. We’ll take a look back at Luis’s interview with a medical student. She discussed the challenges of meeting her goal of becoming a doctor. Then we’ll bring back Carly’s interview with a man who made a profession out of his love of photography. He really knows how to make people look good for portraits and head shots! Finally, we’ll take you back to Luis’s meeting with a couple of librarians who let him in on how their duties have evolved over the years.

Then, we’ll bring back Carly’s interview with a young lady who has a very enviable job as a dance captain on a cruise ship. Plus, we’ll give you an encore of Luis’ interview with a Pediatric Speech and Language Pathologist. She shared how this can be a rewarding career for people who want a career in health care and love to work with children.

Plus we’ll take you back to her interview with a United States Secret Service Agent. She learned there’s a lot of work and planning that goes into protecting our politicians!

We’ve gone into the Real Life vault again to pull out three of our field reporter, Shawn’s favorite interviews from years ago. We’ll start off by bringing back his meeting with a mediator and see how she uses her negotiating and people skills to settle disagreements outside of the courtroom. And then we’ll recall Shawn’s visit with a physician who uses a form of medicine that dates back 5000 years and involves the use of needles to treat medical ailments. Finally, we’ll take you back to the roof of the hospital where he met with a couple of flight paramedics who work to save lives as part of the Air Care Team.

Today, we’ll be at the county morgue and bring back Gracey’s interview with a medical examiner. She discovered this specialty of medicine is much like detective work. And if a morgue doesn’t make your skin crawl, we’ll revisit Shawn’s segment with an beekeeper. He specializes in coming to the rescue when bees have been swarming all around someone’s property. Plus, we’ll take a look back at Gracey’s interview with an athletic trainer who shared with her how you can combine your love of sports and health into one job.

We’ll start with Gracey’s visit to the Parthenon… no, not in Greece… but in Nashville, Tennessee, where she found a full size replica of the original temple. She also got to meet with the museum’s director. Then, we’ll take a look back at Shawn’s interview with a criminal defense attorney and see why he chose this specialty of law. Finally, we’ll revisit a hospital operating room where Gracey talked to a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and learned what she does as part of the surgical team.
