In 1970s Chicago animal psychologist Dr. Irene Pepperberg teaches an African Gray Parrot Alex to become a prodigy. Alex learned to name objects, count, describe color and shape. His language and math skills won the worlds affection Irene's heart.

In 1978 Borneo grad student Gary Shapiro ventures into the rainforest to foster an orphaned orangutan called Princess. They form an intensely close relationship as Princess learns to communicate through sign language.
