Overview

In October of 2013, Curt Danhauser started putting out "Star Trek Logical Thinking" in the style of a Public Service Announcement on Filmation's 1973-75 Animated STAR TREK series on NBC. In each PSA, the logical Mr. Spock corrects crew members he overhears employing a logical fallacy in their discussions.

Spock corrects the logic of Harcourt Fenton Mudd and Cyrano Jones in their shared cell in the brig of the Enterprise. Those other prisoners look familiar as well!

Argument from Fallacy or Bad Reasons Fallacy

Harry Mudd tries out some logic on Cyrano Jones but Spock see's a problem with it. The Enterprise has picked up some more strange prisoners!

Wishful Thinking

Wishful thinking can be fun to fantasise with but has no place in making logical decisions as Spock points out to Yeaoman Rand and Nurse Chapel.

Red Herring (Diversionary Tactic)

Spock is back on the shuttle with two of the alien members of the crew. Logical fallacies are not, it would seem, a purely human trait!

False Analogy

Harry Mudd is trying to put one over on Cyrano again.

Slippery Slope Fallacy

The Imperial Indoctrination Directive shows how Spock keeps a tight reign on illogical behaviour even in the Mirror Universe!

Not As Bad As

Sulu is being dismissal of Chekov's point, oh my!

Entitled to My Opinion (Agree to Disagree)

Harry Mudd and Cyrano Jones agree to disagree but Spock points out that this doesn't actually resolve the issue. This logic lesson features a cameo by Lieutenant Leslie who was portrayed by Eddie Paskey in the original series. Mr. Paskey passed away on August 17, 2021 and was added as a homage.

Appeal to Consequences

Just because one outcome is more desirable than another doesn't make it any more likely.

Appeal to Novelty

When discussing how to do things, which are better: the old ways or the new ways?

Bulverism (Identity Fallacy)

"You like breaking into teams of two because you always want to go off alone with Sulu... to learn all his best tactical maneuvers." Sounds logical to me.
