Essequibo - Hidden River

The mighty Essequibo River holds many secrets. Rising in Guyana’s Acarai Mountains near the Brazilian border, it flows north for about 1,000 kilometres through rainforest and savanna until finally reaching the Atlantic Ocean. That’s where the journey starts: The impressive estuary is dotted with numerous small islands where fruit and vegetables for Guyana’s capital Georgetown are grown. Then, it’s time to travel upstream into endless wilderness, finally reaching the breathtaking Kaieteur Falls.

From Kaieteur Falls, the journey to the legendary source of Essequibo River continues. However, it soon proves to be a dangerous adventure—even for the experienced team with countless rapids and waterfalls along the route. The further they travel upstream, the less populated the country becomes. On their way, they cross unspoiled landscapes, discover rare species and plants and get in touch with indigenous people. But finally, the team is forced to make a detour via Guyana’s wild south...

The teams’ mission is to discover the Essequibo’s source which is hidden deep in the Acarai Mountains on the border to Brazil. However, the last leg turns out to be the most challenging: not only do the experts have to deal with the unpredictable moods of Mother Nature, but also with the dense jungle and finally break-out of fever in their camp. Will they have to end their expedition before finding the mysterious source of the Essequibo that belongs to the last blank spots on the world map?
