Biography

Belisário Augusto de Oliveira Penna was a Brazilian sanitarian, public health physician, and politician. He graduated with a degree in medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia in 1890 and specialized in hygiene and epidemiology. In 1904, he joined the Federal Sanitary Service under the leadership of Oswaldo Cruz, playing an active institutional role in the eradication of yellow fever and smallpox in Rio de Janeiro, and subsequently heading sanitary operations to mitigate malaria outbreaks …
