Overview

A forgotten spirit narrates the history of the Institute for Autoscopic Therapy, a secluded institution founded by physician and seismologist Dr. Emil Schlegel to treat a mysterious condition in which patients lose recognition of their own bodies. Blending neuroscience, alchemy, and geology, Schlegel investigates the relationship between consciousness, bodily perception, and the Earth, proposing that psychological trauma and geological catastrophe are expressions of the same process. As the narrator undergoes his treatment, the boundary between body, self, and geological matter begins to dissolve.
