In Ancient Greece, anaphora was a rhetorical device meaning "carrying back" or "to refer to," involving the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses for emphasis, rhythm, and memorability, used powerfully in speeches, poetry, and philosophy to drive home points and build emotional connection. It was a core tool in oratory, making key messages stick, and in literature, creating musicality and emotional resonance, a technique echoed in later Christian liturgy as "carrying up" an offering.
